Once considered nothing more than pampering for the rich and famous, massage therapy is now finding enormous popularity among millions of Americans. Massage is an instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort and was one of the first types of healing treatment used by humans. The first written references to massage date from 2000-3000 BC. It has been written about extensively since 500 BC and was a major topic in the first medical books printed after invention of the printing press during the Middle Ages.

Massage and other types of manual therapy have undergone cycles of varying degrees of popularity and acceptance throughout history. Massage was utilized during and immediately after World War I and World War II in the rehabilitation of injured soldiers.Using massage therapy in conjunction with mechanical and electrical modalities led to the development of physical therapy. Both professions are directed toward rehabilitation and relaxation.

Through massage therapy the cycle of pain is reduced and relieved, muscles relax, circulation is increased, and the body returns to normal neuromuscular integrity and balance.

Besides the rehabilitation benefits, massage just makes you feel better. Relief is provided to people from all walks of life. Weekend athletes, home gardeners, over-stressed administrators, laborers, parents, and even children can all benefit from massage therapy. In short, if you have a body, you can benefit from therapeutic massage. From infancy to old age, massage has been found to enhance general health and well-being.

Having said that, please remember that massage therapy is a compliment to, and not a replacement of your chosen means of health care.
